Anthony's Story

Anthony's Story

Anthony developed a cancerous condition called Metastatic Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in 2020 when he was only 6 years old. He had to undergo a total excision of his thyroid gland and its surrounding tissues, he also had to go through a several cycles of radioactive iodine therapy as part of his cancer treatment.

Anthony has a tracheostomy (opening in windpipe) tube to help his airway and he needs supplemental oxygen at night-time. Ideally Anthony needed a portable oxygen delivery system but this is not something available on the NHS; Anthony’s Mum, Kate, applied to the Foundation to see if we might fund this and we were very pleased to approve a grant to provide the necessary equipment.

Since receiving the portable oxygen the family have been able to have a holiday in France, visiting the major landmarks and of course taking in Disneyland Paris! They now feel confident to make plans for more trips, which is great news. The equipment has also meant that Anthony can enjoy the treat of sleepovers with his sister at their Grandparents house.

Anthony's Story - Disneyland Paris

Kate described the portable oxygen equipment as having gifted Anthony some freedom and independence, which means a lot to him and to the family as a whole.
